Parish Staff …
Fr. Dan Scheid
For as long as I can remember I’ve felt called to be a priest. God has a way of throwing in a few turns here and there, so my journey took a bit longer than I expected. After graduating from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids with a B.A. in History, I went to work for Rogers Department Store in Grand Rapids, spending about 15 years there in sales and as a buyer and manager. From there I spent two years working for Degage Ministries, a street mission in downtown Grand Rapids, serving as their Development Director. Then, finally, it was on to seminary. I earned a Masters of Divinity from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois, and served for two years as a seminarian-intern at All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Chicago. I was ordained priest here at St. Augustine’s on June 24, 2006, and began my full-time ministry the very next day. My passions in ministry include community outreach, congregational growth, and preaching. I enjoy being outdoors – gardening, hiking, and fly fishing. I also like cooking, reading, and listening to National Public Radio and most kinds of music.
Lay Leadership
A congregation’s leadership doesn’t begin and end with its pastor. St. Augustine’s is blessed with many thoughtful and dedicated people who find their passions in ministry and live them. Our vestry (church board) has nine members and is led by John Forbes. Bruce Banghart keeps an eye on our building and grounds and print publications. Esther Elaine Shoemaker is our organist and choir director. Gail Wells organizes our Food Pantry. Patricia Leonard heads our Altar Guild and Sunday School. Kye Brinkmann leads the Daughters of the King, a group of women committed to praying for the needs of the parish and the community. The ministry of St. A’s and all the people whose lives we touch would be so much less without their service.
